‘Diwan Arrested to Keep Him Out of Elections,’ Wife Saba Diwan Alleges

Former Azad Jammu Kashmir PM visits jailed lawmaker's family, calls arrest political

Former Azad Kashmir Prime Minister Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi visited the family of imprisoned ex-lawmaker Ghulam Mohiuddin Diwan in Lahore on Saturday, condemning his detention as politically motivated and demanding his immediate release.
Niazi, who heads the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party in Azad Kashmir, met Diwan's wife Saba and their children at the family home to express solidarity, his office said. He praised Diwan for resisting "oppression and brutality."
Former minister Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Yasir Ghafoor Gujjar, Mirza Sadiq Jral, Chaudhry Nadeem Nisar, Haji Ijaz Diwan, Saqib Saleem Butt, Zaka Diwan and Ishtiaq Malik accompanied him, the statement said.
Saba Diwan told reporters her husband, a five-time legislator and former minister, was arrested under Section 96-B-23 three months ago to prevent him from contesting upcoming elections in the region. She said he is being held at Kot Lakhpat prison in Lahore.
Despite the verdict in his case being announced, the Punjab government has kept him on false charges and repeatedly delayed bail hearings, she said.

"He is a heart patient," Saba Diwan said, adding that the family has faced continuous harassment. She demanded his release and an end to "political victimization."
Diwan has represented LA-41 Valley To in the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly and served twice as a minister, according to his family.
His wife and Pti leader Saba Diwan, said she won her own seat by a large margin, rejected the election results and called for an end to retaliatory actions against her family.
