Lahore: Heavy rains in Gujranwala have caused damage to part of the historic Samadhi of Sardar Mahan Singh, father of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) has launched urgent restoration efforts to safeguard the Sikh heritage site, which holds global cultural and religious significance.

Sardar Mahan Singh, a prominent Sikh leader of the 18th century, headed the Sukerchakia Misl, one of the twelve Sikh confederacies. His leadership laid the foundation for the rise of his son, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who later established the Sikh Empire. The Samadhi, located in Sheranwala Bagh, Gujranwala, remains a symbol of this historic legacy.

According to officials, soon after the incident was reported, the ETPB dispatched its Executive Engineer along with a technical team to conduct an emergency inspection. Restoration and repair work was initiated immediately to prevent further damage to the structure.

In a related step, the ETPB has written to the District Administration recommending the relocation of the MC Girls School situated adjacent to the Samadhi. The Board stressed that moving the school to another building is necessary to ensure the safety of children and staff during the restoration process.

Authorities further confirmed that a consultant will be hired to oversee the conservation of the Samadhi, with the goal of restoring it to its original condition. “The preservation of this monument is not only vital for Pakistan but also for the Sikh community worldwide,” the Board emphasized.
