In the local elections held on March 15 in the state of Hesse, including Foreigners’ Councils, City Councils, and District Councils, the Punjabi community achieved remarkable success with significant victories
In Frankfurt, Narinder Singh Ghotra contested the city parliament elections for the first time on a Green Party ticket and secured around 51,000 votes. Although he did not win the seat, he registered a strong victory for the second time in the Foreigners’ Council elections with more than 11,000 votes.
In Kelkheim, Harpreet Kaur Sandhu was re-elected to the Foreigners’ Council for the second time and also won a seat in the City Council. Kamalpreet Kaur also achieved success in the Foreigners’ Council elections.
From Marburg, prominent Sikh figure Nirmal Singh Hanspal was elected again to the Foreigners’ Council. Meanwhile, Kashmiri-origin young leader Mahvesh Iftikhar secured her second consecutive victory in the District Council elections from Main-Kinzig District.
These results show that the Punjabi community in Hesse is strengthening its presence not only socially but also politically.
Community leaders including Anoop Singh, Gurcharan Singh Guraya, Harmeet Singh, and Gurpal Singh congratulated the winning candidates. They emphasized that the elected representatives should serve the community under the German constitution and raise awareness among Germans about human rights issues in India.
