In a significant diplomatic development, Pakistan announced on Friday that it will extend an official invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit scheduled to take place in Islamabad in 2027.

· Official Confirmation: Pakistan's Foreign Office confirmed that invitations will be issued to all SCO member states, including India, in accordance with the organization's established protocol.

· SCO Protocol Obligation: A Foreign Office spokesperson stated, “The invitation is an obligation of the host country and will be issued according to the established SCO protocol.”

· Summit Details: Pakistan is set to host the SCO Council of Heads of State (CHS) Summit in Islamabad in 2027 as part of the bloc's rotating presidency.

Context of Strained Relations:

The announcement comes against the backdrop of severely strained bilateral ties following the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people, and India's subsequent military response, "Operation Sindoor." India also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty in the aftermath of the attack.

Uncertainty Over Attendance:

While Pakistan has signaled its intent to invite PM Modi, there has been no official response from the Indian government regarding whether he would attend the summit. In the previous SCO summit hosted by Pakistan in October 2024, India was represented by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, not the Prime Minister.
