WASHINGTON (Nazrana Times) — U.S. President Donald Trump has barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, accusing the three news organizations of publishing what he described as “fake news” about his administration.
Trump announced the decision on September 18 in a social-media post, saying the ban would take effect immediately. He accused the outlets of publishing false or fictional reports about him, his administration and the United States. These allegations are Trump’s claims; Reuters reported that he did not identify a specific news report that triggered the decision. Trump later told reporters that his action was based on what he characterized as a cumulative pattern of coverage over recent years.
The decision was enforced on Saturday, September 19, when journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico were denied entry to the White House. According to the three organizations, their press passes were confiscated when their journalists arrived.
The affected news organizations have challenged the action on constitutional grounds. CNN described the ban as an unlawful interference with its First Amendment rights, while MS NOW and Politico said they would defend their rights and continue covering the Trump administration.
Trump also indicated that other news organizations could face similar restrictions. When questioned about his remarks, he mentioned The New York Times and The Washington Post while criticizing their coverage, although he did not specifically announce bans against those two newspapers.
The move is expected to face legal scrutiny over First Amendment protections for freedom of speech and the press. Previous attempts by the White House to revoke individual journalists’ credentials during Trump’s first term resulted in federal judges ordering press passes restored.
