Lahore-born Councillor Faisal Rana has made history by becoming the Mayor of Rochdale for the 2026–27 civic year, officially taking office on 20 May 2026. His appointment reflects a remarkable journey from military service in Pakistan to civic leadership in the United Kingdom.
Councillor Rana began his career as a commissioned officer in the Pakistan Navy, earning a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and specialising in Marine Engineering. He later completed a prestigious diploma in Warship Construction at the DCN Lorient Naval Shipbuilding Dockyard in France before settling in the UK.
For almost a decade, he has represented the residents of Spotland and Falinge on Rochdale Council. During his time in local government, he has served as Assistant Cabinet Member for Public Health, contributed to financial governance, chaired the Rochdale North Township Committee, and has been recognised for his commitment to community development and public service.
Outside politics, Councillor Rana is an accomplished entrepreneur with more than 23 years of business experience, including serving as a director of a company associated with Shell UK Limited. He also manages a successful property portfolio and is a licensed private pilot.
As Mayor, Councillor Rana has pledged to ensure that every voice across Rochdale is heard while supporting local charities and strengthening community cohesion. His Mayor's Charity Appeal will raise funds for Springhill Hospice, The Christie, SANDS, Rochdale Veterans' Breakfast Club, and the Rochdale Women's Welfare Association.
