Pakistan and India Could Face Each Other Twice in 2027 Cricket World Cup; Up to Six Clashes Possible

LAHORE (Nazrana Times) Ali Imran Chattha
For the first time in ICC Cricket World Cup history, Pakistan and India could potentially meet twice during the same edition of the tournament, with the possibility of further encounters in the knockout stages.
The ICC has announced the schedule for the 2027 ODI World Cup, to be hosted in October and November, with Pakistan and India placed in the same group.
The tournament format means the two sides could meet in the group stage and potentially face each other again in the next phase if both qualify. If both teams progress as expected under the tournament format, their scheduled encounters could include a match in Johannesburg on October 10 and another in Cape Town on November 7.
A further Pakistan-India meeting could also take place in the semi-final or final if both teams advance to the relevant knockout stage.
The possibility of multiple encounters adds to the anticipation surrounding the 2027 tournament, given the significant commercial and broadcast interest traditionally associated with Pakistan-India matches.
There could also be several Pakistan-India encounters outside the World Cup. The Men’s Asia Cup is scheduled to take place around five months before the World Cup in 2027. Depending on the tournament format and qualification, the two teams could meet twice, with a third encounter possible if both reach the final.
As a result, Pakistan and India could potentially play several matches against each other across 2027. If they meet in both scheduled World Cup stages and subsequently face each other in a knockout match, the overall number of encounters across the year could rise significantly.
However, the exact number of Pakistan-India matches will depend on the teams’ qualification and progression through the respective tournaments.
