Punjab Launches Massive Prison Literacy Drive, 17,600 Inmates Enrolled

Lahore, April 30: , Nazrana Times
Punjab has taken a major step forward in prison reforms, launching a province-wide literacy initiative aimed at eliminating illiteracy among inmates and transforming jails into centers of rehabilitation.
Under the Chief Minister’s reform agenda, adult education programs have now been introduced in all prisons across the province. As part of this initiative, 176 literacy centers have been established in 44 prisons, where approximately 17,600 inmates are currently receiving education at the same time.
The program was formally inaugurated at District Jail Lahore, where senior officials opened newly established literacy classrooms and interacted with inmates serving as both teachers and students. The initiative reflects a broader shift in prison policy—from punishment toward education, skill-building, and reintegration.

Officials stated that large prisons will house up to 15 literacy centers each, while smaller facilities will operate at least four. Educated inmates have been assigned teaching roles, creating a peer-driven learning environment inside prisons. Both teachers and learners have been provided with special uniforms to promote discipline and identity within the program.
In a significant incentive, prison authorities have announced sentence reductions for inmates who either teach or pursue education. Additionally, prison teachers will receive compensation through the Literacy and Basic Education Department, further encouraging participation.
Speaking at the event, officials emphasized that prisons in Punjab are being redefined as reformative institutions. A new system of educational screening will assess every inmate upon entry, ensuring that those lacking basic education are immediately enrolled in literacy programs. Authorities also highlighted improvements in prison industries, where inmates’ products will now be marketed through modern sales systems.
The reform agenda extends beyond prison walls. Authorities confirmed that inmates released before completing their education will continue their studies outside through government literacy programs. In a parallel move, an adult education initiative is also being launched for 40,000 probationers across Punjab.
Officials described the initiative as an opportunity for inmates to rebuild their lives through education. They stressed that learning and skill development would play a crucial role in reducing repeat offenses and helping former prisoners reintegrate into society.
Alongside education reforms, the government is introducing additional welfare measures, including improved visitation systems for families, prison welfare stores, and expanded healthcare programs. These steps are aimed at ensuring dignity, support, and rehabilitation for inmates during their time in custody.
Authorities and education officials have pledged full cooperation to make the literacy program successful, calling it a landmark move toward a more humane and progressive prison system in Punjab.
