India’s TEC Reports 596 Telecom Standards on World Standards Day 2026
New Delhi, October 14 (Nazrana Times): India’s Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) has released 596 telecom standards and issued more than 5,400 certificates, according to a Press Information Bureau statement issued on World Standards Day 2026.
The figures were highlighted as TEC marked the occasion at Manak Hall in New Delhi. The event focused on India’s contribution to international telecom standards and the importance of secure, reliable and compatible communication networks.
TEC, the national telecommunications standardization body under the Department of Telecommunications, has also designated 82 Conformity Assessment Bodies. These bodies assess whether telecom equipment meets applicable requirements.
The 596 standards cover several technology areas and include Essential Requirements, Generic Requirements, Test Guides and other standard documents.
Why telecom standards matter
Telecom standards help equipment and networks work together while setting requirements for security and service quality. For consumers, these requirements support reliable communication services and help protect their interests.
According to the statement, TEC’s standards also support domestic technology development and align India’s telecommunications ecosystem with international benchmarks.
Under the Telecommunications (Framework to Notify Standards, Conformity Assessment and Certification) Rules, 2025, TEC formulates standards, recognises conformity assessment bodies and issues certificates.
India’s contribution to international standards
Addressing senior officers at the event, TEC Head and Senior Deputy Director General Syed Tausif Abbas praised their contributions to the International Telecommunication Union’s Telecommunication Standardization Sector, known as ITU-T.
He highlighted the leadership positions held by TEC officers in ITU-T Study Groups, through which India contributes to international work on telecom equipment, services and networks.
