Zelenskyy Arrives in New York for UNGA, Set to Meet Trump on Ukraine War and Energy Truce

NEW YORK, September 22 (Nazrana Times) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he is scheduled to meet U.S. President Donald Trump amid renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating the Russia-Ukraine war. 

Zelenskyy and Trump agreed to hold the New York meeting during a telephone conversation on September 20. Zelenskyy said the peace process remains Ukraine’s top priority and referred to possible de-escalation measures involving energy security, food security and the protection of human life. 

A key issue expected to feature in Tuesday’s talks is a possible halt to attacks on energy infrastructure. Reuters reported that an energy ceasefire is among the subjects under discussion, while Kyiv wants any reduction in its attacks on Russian energy facilities to be matched by Russian restraint against Ukrainian targets. 

Zelenskyy is also expected to discuss Ukraine’s need for additional U.S.-made Patriot air-defence systems as Kyiv prepares for the winter amid continuing Russian drone and missile attacks. 

French President Emmanuel Macron said after meeting Trump in New York that they had discussed proposals for a mutual moratorium on Ukraine-Russia strikes connected to the energy sector, as well as strengthening Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. 

Trump has a busy diplomatic schedule at the UN gathering on September 22, including meetings with Zelenskyy and several other world leaders.
