Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, Officiating Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, formally inaugurated the General Shabeg Singh Memorial Charitable Trust today by offering an ardas (Sikh prayer) in memory of the great martyr of the June 1984 Ghallughara, General Shabeg Singh. This trust has been established to preserve and honour the legacy of the legendary Sikh warrior.
During the inauguration, Jathedar Gargajj prayed before Guru Sahib, seeking strength for the entire Sikh community to safeguard the rich heritage of such martyrs. The ceremony was graced by Jathedar Bhai Tek Singh of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, General Shabeg Singh’s brother S. Beant Singh, members of his family, and Prof Baljinder Singh.
S. Beant Singh and his family honoured Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj and Jathedar Bhai Tek Singh with siropaos (robes of honor) and ceremonial swords. In return, Jathedar Gargajj also presented a siropao to S. Beant Singh, appreciating the family’s efforts in establishing this memorial.
Speaking on the occasion, Jathedar Gargajj reflected on the sacrifice of Sikh warriors who, during the 1984 military attack on Sri Akal Takht Sahib, stood with unwavering courage against the oppressive regime. He especially mentioned the valiant leadership Sant Giani Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, General Shabeg Singh, and Bhai Amrik Singh, among many others who attained martyrdom while defending the dignity of the Sikh community and its sacred institutions.
He described General Shabeg Singh as a remarkable soldier who fearlessly fought for country when the nation called upon him, and later stood with equal bravery when it came to defending the rights of the Sikh community and the sanctity of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib.
Jathedar Gargajj praised the efforts to convert General Shabeg Singh’s ancestral home in village Khiala Kalan into the General Shabeg Singh Memorial Charitable Trust. He commended Beant Singh, the family, and other supporters for this noble initiative, stating it is vital to preserve the heritage of such great martyrs at the very place where they lived so that future generations may draw inspiration from their legacy.
