Jailed Pakistani Human Rights Lawyers Honoured with Prestigious International Award

Islamabadੲ Nazrana Times Pakistani human rights lawyers Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali Chattha have been awarded the prestigious Ludovic Trarieux International Human Rights Prize in recognition of their commitment to defending human rights and the rule of law.

The award is regarded as one of the world's most respected honours for lawyers and is named after French lawyer and human rights advocate Ludovic Trarieux. Established in 1984, the prize is presented annually to lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional courage in defending fundamental freedoms despite facing personal risks.

Mazari-Hazir and Chattha were selected for their extensive legal work on cases involving enforced disappearances, civil liberties, freedom of expression, and the protection of vulnerable and marginalized communities. Both lawyers have represented individuals in high-profile human rights cases and have been vocal advocates for constitutional rights and legal accountability.

The honour places them among a distinguished group of international human rights defenders. Notably, Nelson Mandela was the first recipient of the award in 1985 while he was imprisoned during South Africa's apartheid era.

The recognition has been viewed as a significant international acknowledgement of the two lawyers' contributions to human rights advocacy and the legal profession. Their selection highlights the global attention being paid to the challenges faced by lawyers working on sensitive human rights issues and underscores the importance of protecting the independence of the legal profession.
