PM Shehbaz Sharif Meets UN Secretary-General Candidate Olara Otunnu, Reaffirms Pakistan’s Commitment to Multilateralism

Pakistan stresses respect for UN Charter, international law and treaties; PM calls for balanced focus on peace, development and human rights

ISLAMABAD — Nazrana Times: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reiterated Pakistan’s firm commitment to multilateralism and the principles of the United Nations Charter during a meeting with Ambassador Olara Otunnu, a candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Ambassador Otunnu called on the prime minister in Islamabad and was accompanied by Ruhakana Rugunda, Special Envoy of the President of Uganda and former Prime Minister of Uganda.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch were also present during the meeting.

Pakistan Reaffirms Support for UN Charter

During the discussion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the principles and purposes enshrined in the United Nations Charter.

He stressed the importance of upholding international law and respecting international treaties, highlighting their significance for maintaining an effective rules-based international system.

The prime minister said Pakistan would continue to extend strong and consistent support to multilateralism and to the United Nations’ central role in addressing global challenges.

PM Outlines Priorities for Next UN Secretary-General

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope that the next UN Secretary-General would maintain a balanced and interconnected focus on the three principal pillars of the United Nations: peace and security, development, and human rights.

His remarks underscored Pakistan’s position that progress in these areas should be pursued collectively rather than treating them as separate global priorities.

Otunnu Appreciates Pakistan’s Global Role

Ambassador Olara Otunnu thanked Pakistan for its longstanding contribution to multilateralism and its engagement across the UN’s three key pillars.
He also appreciated Pakistan’s leadership and its role in ongoing international efforts aimed at promoting global peace and security.
The meeting comes as diplomatic engagement surrounding the selection of the next United Nations Secretary-General continues, with candidates seeking support from UN member states.
