Faisalabad Plans Bhagat Singh Monument, Canal-Side Walking Tracks in Public-Space Initiative

The Faisalabad district administration is planning a monument dedicated to Bhagat Singh and walking tracks along both sides of the Rakh Branch Canal as part of efforts to improve recreational facilities, public spaces and the city’s historical character.

Deputy Commissioner Nouman Siddique said the proposed canal-side tracks are intended to provide residents with additional space for walking, exercise and other outdoor activities while making better use of open areas along the waterway.

The administration has also proposed establishing a monument to Bhagat Singh, the revolutionary figure associated with the anti-colonial movement in the Indian subcontinent. According to the deputy commissioner, the proposal is linked to efforts to preserve and highlight the historical heritage associated with Faisalabad and the surrounding region.

From Lyallpur to Faisalabad

Faisalabad was formerly known as Lyallpur. Developed as a major settlement of the Chenab Colony during the British colonial period, the city was named after Sir James Lyall. It was renamed Faisalabad in 1977.

The reference to the city’s former name remains important in discussions about its historical identity and heritage.

More Parks and Walking Facilities Planned

The canal-side project is part of a wider programme under consideration by the district administration to improve recreational spaces across Faisalabad.

According to the deputy commissioner, work is being pursued through union councils to develop eight parks at locations where suitable land and canal-side spaces are available.

The Parks and Horticulture Authority has also identified a number of existing parks requiring maintenance and rehabilitation.

Similar walking facilities are planned for Jaranwala, while Samundri already has a walking track available for residents, the deputy commissioner said.

Bazaars, Parking and Public Spaces Also in Focus

Alongside parks and walking tracks, the district administration is pursuing other urban improvement schemes involving bazaars, public spaces and parking facilities.

The projects are intended to improve civic amenities, provide residents with better recreational options and enhance the overall appearance of Faisalabad.

The proposed Bhagat Singh monument and walking tracks along the Rakh Branch Canal are, however, still at the planning stage. Based on the information currently available, the proposals have been attributed to the Faisalabad district administration and should not be described as a formally approved province-wide Punjab government project unless a separate official notification is issued.
